Protecting Students, Partnering With Families
Information Security is the BVSD team responsible for keeping student technology safe. That includes the web filtering on every school-issued device, and the tools teachers and staff use to manage it day to day. We configure and maintain these systems so students can use technology for learning without unnecessary risk, and so families can trust what's happening on their child's BVSD device.
You shouldn't have to just take that on faith. This page, and the ones linked from it, explain plainly what we filter, why we filter it, and how you can stay involved as a parent or guardian. If something here doesn't add up, or you think we've gotten something wrong, we want to hear about it.
One part of that work is web filtering, which operates in layers: different protections active at different times and scales, from the district network down to what happens on a student's Chromebook after school. Each layer below sits inside the one before it, broader and always-on at the top, narrower and time-limited at the bottom.

Why we filter
As we bring more digital tools into the classroom, we want every student to have a safe, focused space to learn online. Web filtering isn't just about blocking websites. It's designed to create layers of support that involve the whole school community: students building digital citizenship skills, teachers keeping lessons on track, parents staying informed at home, and our team maintaining safety standards district-wide.
That's also why filtering isn't one-size-fits-all. A kindergartner and a graduating senior need very different levels of access, and a supervised classroom looks different from an unsupervised evening at home. Each layer exists to fit one of those situations well. This approach also satisfies the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA), the federal law requiring schools like ours to filter student internet access, but for us, that's the floor, not the goal.
Common questions
Can I block additional websites myself?
Yes. Outside school hours, GoGuardian Parent lets you add your own site blocks, pause internet access, and set usage windows on your child's BVSD device. See the GoGuardian Parent page for how to get started.
What if a site is blocked that shouldn't be, or vice versa?
Start with your child's teacher. They can usually override a miscategorized site right away during class. If it keeps happening or the issue isn't resolved, Information Security can take it from here. Details on the GoGuardian Parent page.
Where can I see exactly what's filtered for my child's grade?

No deberías tener que aceptarlo solo por confianza. Esta página, y las que se enlazan desde ella, explican con claridad qué filtramos, por qué lo filtramos y cómo puedes participar como padre, madre o tutor. Si algo aquí no cuadra, o crees que nos equivocamos en algo, queremos saberlo.
Una parte de ese trabajo es el filtrado web, que funciona por capas: distintas protecciones activas en distintos momentos y a distintas escalas, desde la red del distrito hasta lo que ocurre en el Chromebook de un estudiante después de clases. Cada capa que aparece abajo está contenida dentro de la anterior: más amplia y siempre activa arriba, más específica y limitada por horario abajo.
Se aplica a cualquier dispositivo conectado al wifi del distrito, sea de la escuela o personal.

Por qué filtramos
A medida que incorporamos más herramientas digitales al salón de clases, queremos que cada estudiante tenga un espacio seguro y enfocado para aprender en línea. El filtrado web no se trata solo de bloquear sitios web. Está diseñado para crear capas de apoyo que involucran a toda la comunidad escolar: estudiantes que desarrollan habilidades de ciudadanía digital, maestros que mantienen las clases en marcha, familias que se mantienen informadas en casa y nuestro equipo que mantiene los estándares de seguridad en todo el distrito.
Por eso el filtrado no es igual para todos. Un estudiante de kindergarten y uno de último año de preparatoria necesitan niveles de acceso muy distintos, y un salón supervisado no es lo mismo que una noche sin supervisión en casa. Cada capa existe para adaptarse bien a una de esas situaciones. Este enfoque también cumple con la Ley de Protección de Menores en Internet (CIPA), la ley federal que exige que las escuelas como la nuestra filtren el acceso a internet de los estudiantes; pero para nosotros ese es el punto de partida, no la meta.

¿Puedo bloquear otros sitios web por mi cuenta?
Sí. Fuera del horario escolar, GoGuardian Parent te permite agregar tus propios bloqueos de sitios, pausar el acceso a internet y establecer horarios de uso en el dispositivo del BVSD de tu hijo. Consulta la página de GoGuardian Parent para saber cómo empezar.
¿Qué pasa si un sitio está bloqueado y no debería estarlo, o al revés?
Empieza por el maestro de tu hijo. Por lo general puede desbloquear de inmediato un sitio mal clasificado durante la clase. Si sigue ocurriendo o no se resuelve, Seguridad de la Información puede encargarse. Encontrarás los detalles en la página de GoGuardian Parent.
