E-Bike Safety

With the increase of electric bicycle usage around Boulder County, local trauma centers have seen an increase in injuries related to this economical and environmentally friendly mode of transportation. E-bike popularity has continued to grow but so have the risks to our youth. The biggest risk associated with e-bikes is speed. The faster you ride, the greater the impact in a crash.

E-bike classifications:

  • Class 1: Pedal-assist only, motor cuts off at 20 mph
  • Class 2: Throttle-assisted, motor cuts off at 20 mph
  • Class 3: Pedal-assist only, motor cuts off at 28 mph (for riders 16+ only)

*Please note that to be classified as an e-bike, the bike must adhere to the above speed limitations, have working pedals, and less than 750 watts of power.

Anything with more power is considered an e-moto, which would require a license with a valid motorcycle endorsement, registration, license plates, and insurance, and is not allowed in bike lanes or on multi-use paths.

By ensuring your child is ready to handle the responsibility of an e-bike, choosing the right model, and staying informed about local regulations, which vary by city, you can help them enjoy the benefits of electric-assist mobility safely.

Thoughtful choices today will set your student up for a safer and more enjoyable experience on the road tomorrow.

Understanding what IS and is NOT an e-bike will help keep your child safe

Electric-assist e-bikes are booming across the Boulder Valley School District. It’s important that students and parents understand the rules for safe riding and most importantly—when selecting an appropriate e-bike for your student—knowing what is and isn't a safe, appropriate and in many cases, legal option, based on the student’s age.
