Counseling Support

The Bully Prevention lessons began in the first week of October 2023 and continued into the beginning of November. There were five bilingual lessons administered weekly to grades K-5th during the library schedule using the Second Step Bully Prevention curriculum. The topics covered were 1) Types of conflicts, 2) Recognizing bullying, 3) Reporting Bullying, 4) Refusing Bullying, and 5) Using Bystander Power to be an Upstander (Ally). The lessons were taught using roleplays, videos, “think, pair, share” activities (Kagan structures) and skits with puppets to address different learning styles. At the end of the unit students in 3rd-5th grade were given a written assessment. Students who did not show proficiency on the assessment had a short mini-lesson session with our counselor and then scored proficient or higher. These lessons were communicated to parents in the weekly family newsletter along with links to more bully prevention resources. 

At the beginning of November 2023, students in 2nd-5th took the district Climate survey during their library class time. We informed parents about the survey through the Family newsletter. Students responded to statements about their school concerning safety, student and teacher relationships, and bullying among others. This data is in Vizlab for staff to use in determining if we met our Climate Unified Improvement Plan (UIP) goals.

The BPEG committee had the initial meeting in September, and at this time we met to discuss our goals, set our priorities and assign tasks.  
In October, the BPEG committee members took the BPEG assessment to see what systems and practices that we already had in place and areas that we needed to develop.
In November, the BPEG committee members took the Second Step self- assessment. The rest of the staff took the assessment later during a staff meeting.
 

In September 2023, a team from University Hill comprised of the Principal, a counselor, and two teachers attended a two-day training provided by BVSD.  This training, Behavior Intervention Support Team (BIST), allowed us to meet as a team and identify needs for our school.  The team then created a presentation for staff about BIST and instruction/interventions for tier 1-3 behavior.
At staff meetings, we discussed what aspects of the BIST program we want to integrate into our own behavioral management system.

The following are steps we have taken: 

Reflection (Time to Think) Form
At the beginning of the year, staff members gave feedback on our current Time to Think (TtT) form as well as models from other schools and programs.
BPEG committee members drafted a new Reflection form, to take the place of the TtT form, using concepts from the BIST training and staff feedback.
The draft was shared with staff for final input before using it in our school wide behavior management plan.

Values Matrix
At the end of the 2022-2023 school year, the Uni Hill community adopted 5 new values: Community, Courage, Growth Mindset, Joy and Kindness.

• Bully Prevention Committee members with our district TOSA in charge of implementing the BPEG, created a matrix with specific behavior aligned to our values for each school area: bathrooms, bus, cafeteria, classrooms and specials, hallways, library, the playground, and the whole school.

• These were shared to the staff for feedback and input.

• Our counselor, turned these matrices into posters to display in each school area and for teachers to use in direct instruction of the school’s behavioral expectations. 

• These will be shared with families through the school communication newsletter.

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system

• We use “Eagle Talons” to reinforce positive behavior with our students.

• The BPEG committee revamped the Eagle Talons to reflect our new values.

• The PBIS system was re-implemented school wide.
