Counseling Support

Elementary Counseling

A comprehensive elementary school counselor provides education, prevention and intervention services in the areas of academic, career and social/emotional development supports. It is important to note that elementary counselors are not therapists; rather they are professional educators with a mental health perspective. They typically spend the majority of their time working on universal instruction and working with all students. The elementary counselors will work in collaboration with administration, teachers, the mental health team and parents to determine the needs of all students within each building.

Tiered Support

Through the Multi-Tiered System of Supports, we provide more targeted and intensive help for students who need it -- both academically and social/emotionally.

Universal
We strive to support all students with universal programming.

Targeted
When a student is struggling, our teachers, school counselors and psychologists give more targeted help.

Intensive
If targeted support does not work or a student is in crisis our educators employ more intensive interventions.

Social-Emotional Well-Being and Bullying

At University Hill, the well-being of students is a top priority.  Our school uses the Second Step program to help educate our students around supporting prosocial behaviors and social & emotional well-being.  Second Step teaches social emotional skills through lessons such using self-talk, being assertive, having a growth-mindset, setting goals, managing emotions, and displaying empathy and kindness. Second Step also has a separate unit on bullying prevention.

In addition, our school counselor will be using a variety of avenues to help build community, reinforce our school values, and foster respect and inclusion so that every student feels safe and valued by the community.

At times, conflicts may arise between students that require adult support. BVSD supports all schools with ongoing training in implementing restorative practices in conflict resolution. Our training in restorative practices is evidence based. Most student conflicts resolved with Restorative Practices result in learning for all students involved and support a positive school culture.

Occasionally, there is student conflict in which physical or emotional safety is at risk. BVSD has a Reporting Bullying form available for anyone to use to inform a school of a safety issue. Please use this form to report a bullying incident (link available on homepage). If you are unsure if your student has experienced bullying, review this quick presentation to learn the difference between disagreement, rude behavior, mean behavior, and bullying.
