Family Literacy

The Boulder Family Literacy Program is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty and illiteracy by improving the educational opportunities of low-income families by helping parents actively support their children's education through participation in programs such as Adult Education including English as a Second Language and GED, Parent Education, Family Management, and intergenerational activities at their child's school.

Goals of the Family Literacy Program

  • Prepare preschool children for elementary school
  • Enhance the home learning environment
  • Increase the language and literacy skills of the parent
  • Improve the literacy and math achievement of school-age students

 

What is Family Literacy?

The Boulder Valley Family Literacy program follows the National Center for Family Literacy and Even Start Program models. The following components make up the program:

  • Parent education consisting of ESL, GED and Computer Literacy

  • Early childhood education for children 2years-5 years following the Creative Curriculum
  • Homework Support and Tutoring for school-age children
  • Parenting classes
  • PACT (Parents and Children Together) with center-based activities for parents to join their children in child directed play
  • Home visits guided by the Parents as Teachers curriculum


Who Can Participate?

Families eligible to participate include those:

  • With children who are birth to 5th grade in the Boulder Valley School District

  • With parents who have high literacy needs
  • Who qualify for free and reduced lunch or who qualify for Head Start

BVFLP is supported by the Adult Education and Family Literacy Act, the federal Title 1 program, and Even Start.
