Superintendent seeks feedback on finances through relaunched Budget Advisory Committee

BOULDER - Valuing its partnership with parents and community members, the Boulder Valley School District is bringing back a popular committee that helps provide feedback regarding budget-related issues.

During the height of the Great Recession, the members of the Budget Advisory Committee helped Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) navigate some very difficult financial questions, including how to make significant budget cuts in 2010.

Thankfully, today BVSD is in much better financial shape. District administrators, however, are still facing some tough financial decisions due to limited funding from the state and they are once again seeking the advice of our community on the best ways to move forward.

“We expect the committee will engage in discussions about the budgeting process and priorities,” explained Superintendent Dr. Cindy Stevenson in late-October when plans about the committee were announced at a Board of Education meeting. “It will also likely offer feedback on fiscal and budget strategies -- including capital investments, bond options and override opportunities.”

As before, the committee will include parent and resident voices from different regional areas of BVSD. Given the nature of the committee, a financial background may be helpful but is not required.

Additionally, invitations to participate will also be extended to BVSD’s employee organizations, Impact on Education, cities and towns, and the University of Colorado.

The group will meet approximately six times each year -- starting in January and focusing on the budget season, which ends in June.

“We appreciate the feedback of our community and understand the great benefit of having a variety of voices involved in the process,” said Stevenson. “In my experience, parents and other members of our community often bring alternative viewpoints and new solutions to the table.”

Those interested in joining the Budget Advisory Committee will need to submit an application, which is available on the front page of BVSD’s website (
