Crest View Elementary finds Biking to School has its Rewards

School earns top prize and smoothie party

More than 1,640 BVSD students and staff from 31 schools registered for the second annual BVSD Bike to School Day on Earth Day, April 22. Though many more participated than registered, registration was encouraged for the event by offering prizes to individuals and awarding a grand prize to the school with the greatest participation based on registration.

Crest View Elementary in Boulder won the grand prize with 43.5 percent participation of students and staff (based on registration). The smoothie party is sponsored by a Boulder-based company called Rush. The Rush Smoothie Party will be held at the school for all 660 students and staff on Wednesday, May 19 from noon to 2 p.m.

The top ten schools all had participation over 20 percent, with Bear Creek Elementary, Horizons K-8, Foothill Elementary and Creekside Elementary all showing high participation.

"It was a close call," said Landon Hilliard, BVSD’s Safe Routes to School Coordinator. "There was great enthusiasm at many schools." Hilliard credited the high interest in Bike to School Day to a robust Safe Routes to School Program that has been growing over the past four years.

"All-Natural Rush Smoothie was generous enough to donate a smoothie party to the winning school for two years in a row," said Sue Prant, Bike to School day coordinator. "We feel All-Natural Rush Smoothie is a perfect match for this program. Bike to School Day and Safe Routes to School are all about getting kids to have activity in their everyday life, while thinking and learning about the environmental impact of transportation choices. As we see from the childhood obesity awareness program championed by Michelle Obama, exercise and healthy food choices go a long way to combating the health epidemic."

"We’re thrilled to help Crest View celebrate as the winning school for Bike to School Day," said Andrew Pudalov, owner of Rush, who has a child at Heatherwood Elementary. "Heatherwood did a great job and was up there in the top 10, but some of these schools are so keen on biking, they are just hard to beat. Maybe next year!"

Thank you to our sponsors and partners: BVSD IT Department, Cat-Eye, City of Boulder/GO Boulder, Colorado Safe Routes to School Program, Community Cycles, All-Natural Rush Smoothie, Studio Arc-hive, and all the parent volunteers of the BVSD Safe Routes to School Program.
