Six teams of BVSD middle school students competed on Wednesday, April 13, in the district's annual Iron Chef competition at Casey Middle School. The winning entree, Chicken Piccata with Fresh Pasta and Garlic Broccoli, will be featured on the school menu next year. The dish was created by Albin Halquist, a seventh-grader at Casey Middle School, and Kaitek Johnston, a sixth-grader at Summit Middle School. Participating teams included Aspen Creek K-8 (two teams), Monarch K-8, Centennial, Casey and the winning Casey/Summit team. This year’s category was “Chicken dish from a specific nationality or ethnicity,” and students created delicious and creative concoctions including Chicken Tikka Masala, Moroccan Chicken with Couscous, and Brazilian Chicken Meatballs with Lime-Zucchini Rice. All participating teams earned prize money that will go towards food and nutrition projects at their schools. The culinary creations were judged by an expert chef panel that included managers from BVSD Food Services, guest judges from area restaurants, the Boulder Farmer's Market, CU-Boulder, and current BVSD students. Iron Chef competitors enthusiastically provided information on their dishes as they presented them to the judges. Each team was challenged to create a dish that costs $1.25 or less per plate and meets nutritional guidelines of the National School Lunch Program.
