Two more National Board Certifications earned by BVSD Educators

BOULDER, CO: BVSD Educators Jacqueline Howard (Kohl Elementary School) and Jonathan Warshaw (Foothill Elementary School). earned their National Board Certifications in 2016.

Boulder Valley School District now has a cumulative total of 178 National Board Certifications that have been earned by teachers while they were at BVSD. Like Board certification in professions such as medicine and architecture, National Board Certification is the highest mark of accomplishment in teaching.

Jacqueline Howard, Fifth Grade Teacher at Kohl Elementary School in Broomfield
“Getting my NBCT was both challenging and fulfilling. The process stretched my thinking about everything I had learned about teaching, specifically teaching reading. My master's degree is in reading and I took CLIP training several years ago. What I learned from these two trainings became part of my everyday teaching routine and belief system. Taking the National Boards made me go back and remember the specifics of what I was doing and why I was doing it. It made me rethink my teaching practice and see what was relevant and effective and what areas I needed to improve upon. The process took a lot of time, effort and perseverance, but it was definitely worth it!”

Jonathan Warshaw, Teacher Librarian at Foothill Elementary School in Boulder
“As an educator for almost 20 years, I have had the experience of participating in various forms of professional development. However, going through National Board Certification and then renewing, has been the most demanding yet rewarding experiences to date. NBCT challenged me as an educator to truly reflect on my profession and the importance of being a lifelong learner. The process required me to answer critical questions on what is truly important when teaching children. I would highly recommend the NBCT certification to anyone who is willing to take their teaching to the next level.”

According to a brief from National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, "Over a decade’s worth of research shows that the students of Board-certified teachers outperform their peers in other classrooms on achievement tests and that schools and districts with a high concentration of NBCTs see marked improvements in school culture, collaboration and teacher retention."
