Boulder Valley Prepares to Open Four New Schools

Innovative buildings provide peek into the future of education

BOULDER - This week Boulder Valley School District will open four new school buildings. Creekside (Boulder), Douglass (Boulder) and Emerald (Broomfield) elementary schools and Meadowlark (Erie), serving grades PK-8, were designed to be exemplars in educational innovation and sustainability. The three elementary schools replace worn out buildings while the PK-8 school will accommodate enrollment growth.

“The construction of these new buildings gave us an excellent opportunity to rethink the design of school buildings and our approach to education,” said Assistant Superintendent of Operational Services Rob Price.

The buildings, built with 2014 Bond dollars, were shaped by Boulder Valley’s Strategic Plan, which focuses on educational innovation. The buildings employ flexible learning environments to create spaces that will allow teachers to personalize learning for students, use multiple modes to deliver instruction and facilitate learning to fully engage students in their education. A variety of spaces, along with furniture and even walls that can be easily reconfigured, support different teaching approaches and learning needs throughout the day.

In addition, the schools are built to the highest green building standards to support the district’s aggressive sustainability and energy efficiency goals. They have been designed to be net zero energy capable, maximizing energy efficiency and laying the groundwork for future installation of renewable energy sources. The buildings exceed standards for fresh air intake, push the envelope for waste diversion, and feature abundant daylighting throughout.
