Welcome! We are so glad you are leading enthusiastic readers through the Battle of the Books program!

Hopefully, you find everything you need to answer your questions in these pages. Feel free to reach out to the Battle of the Books coordinator if these resources do not have what you are looking for.

Even though this is a competition, the purpose of Battle of the Books is to inspire reading for the love of reading.  

All students are encouraged to read ALL the books on the Book List for the event.

Team Design:

• A School Team is a group of students in the same grade level. 
  • Students read all fall semester.
  • Teams should register by November 13.
• A District Team is a group of up to 5 students within the same grade level from the same school. 
  • School competitions should be done by March 31.
  • District Teams register by April 11.

District Competition:

• Multiple teams sit in assigned classrooms and complete a quiz under the guidance of an emcee who will broadcast into each classroom.
• Questions are read aloud by the emcee while students follow along, reading on their team chromebook. Teams have 30 seconds to answer. All teams move to the next question at the same time.
• Winning teams receive place ribbons (1st, 2nd, or 3rd) and a new book. The first place team receives a traveling trophy to display for the following school year.
• The District Competition dates are April 26, 2025 for grades 3-8, and April 24 for High School.

Battle of the Books Titles:

• The list is posted in September on the Battle of the Books main page.

• BVSD uses books from the Alaska Association of School Librarians. All books and questions are selected and written by this organization and not by employees of BVSD.

Costs: Free for students to participate

• BVSD purchases your school membership and a district membership along with covering the costs involved in conducting the district competition.  

• School Coordinators are responsible for gathering the books and running the school battle. 
  • Both the Boulder Bookstore and Barnes & Noble Boulder offer teacher discounts of 20%. 
  • The Library Services department will do their best to add BoB books to the district digital library (Sora) and to supplement school libraries with print copies if possible in October.
  • Donations are welcome. 

• Schools/Teams may choose to design and purchase Team T-shirts to wear to the district competition.

Timeline:

Fall 2024:  

• Get students excited to participate! 
• Register your teams in October using this Registration Form.

• Recruit a volunteers to help with the District event in April.

• Start reading!

Winter 2024/25:

• Continue to support the reading and discussion of the books through book clubs, lunch groups, or check ins.

• Practice Rounds for fun! BVSD will upload practice round questions into this Battle of the Books Manager Resrouces page in January.

Spring 2025:

• Complete School Battles before April 4, 2025 

• Register your District Team for each grade level.

• The District Competition dates are April 26, 2025 for grades 3-8, and April 24 for High School.

Notice:

• Schools coordinate their own teams and school event. 

• Volunteers must complete the BVSD volunteer process before working in schools or with students. 

• A virtual Team Manager Meeting will be held December 3, 2024.   A calendar invitation with the Google Meet link will be sent out by November 15, 2024.
