Timeline Overview

  • September - book list released
  • October - deadline to register teams to compete
  • January - practice battle questions shared with School Coordinators and Team Managers
  • February 26 - deadline to host school level competitions
  • March 5 - deadline to register teams for the District competition
  • March 25 - High School District competition
  • March 27 - 3-5th grade District competition
  • April 2 - bonus Regional books announced

Detailed Timeline

Fall:  Get students excited to participate! 

  • All resources can be found in this Battle of the Books webpage. 

  • Recruit and identify a School Coordinator for each school and a Team Manager for each grade. The school coordinator is responsible for registering teams for district and regional events, recruiting volunteers for these events, and supporting team managers throughout the school year. The team manager could be a classroom teacher, teacher librarian, support teacher (ESL, Literacy, Special Education), community volunteer or a parent. The Team Manager will attend the district and regional events in the Spring with the team and will support students reading the books during the school year. 

  • Register your teams in October. Registration forms are open until October 30. You do not need to know the exact students competing. This registration is only to share your intent to send grade level teams to the district and regional battles in the Spring. Please include email addresses of all those who should receive communications from the district.  

  • Recruit a volunteer to help us run the District Event in March and/or the Regional competition in April. In an effort to run a smooth and efficient competition, we are asking each participating team to recruit at least one volunteer to help out on the day of the District and Regional Battles. Volunteers who are not BVSD employees must complete the BVSD volunteer process before working at the district event. 

  • Start reading and reading and reading and reading!!

Winter:

  • Continue to support the reading and discussion of the books through book clubs, lunch groups, or check ins.

  • Support students to participate in Practice Rounds for fun! BVSD will share practice round questions with School Coordinator/Team Managers in January.

  • Confirm your volunteer can be available for the District and Regional Battles.  Volunteers will be asked to attend a virtual training session in March.

Spring:

  • If you have more than one team for a grade level, or if you have more than 5 students competing for a spot on the grade level team, run School Battles before February 26, 2027 to determine who will be competing at the district level. 

    • A BVSD employee should oversee the school battle. 

    • School Team questions will be available in February.

  • Submit the names of your students at each grade level representing your school in the district battle using the District Team Registration Form by March 5, 2027. 

  • District competition schedules will be listed for each day of competition.

  • Regional Event: the top three teams from the District competition will move on to the Regional competition, scheduled for April 24, 2027.

Notice:

  • Please check in with your school to find out who is organizing the school competition in February. The information above is only for the district and regional competitions and schools will coordinate their own event first. The coordinator can be any Staff member or a Volunteer.

  • Volunteers must complete the BVSD volunteer process before working in schools or with students.
