Every Spring bilingual students from BVSD schools participate in the Colorado Spanish Spelling Bee sponsored by Colorado Association for Bilingual Education. K-8th grade students first compete at their school Spanish spelling bee amongst their classmates for the chance to compete against students from all over the state of Colorado. Two 4th-8th Grade winners then advance on to the National Spanish Spelling Bee, held in July in El Paso, Texas. Bilingual students interested in competing in this event should contact their gifted and talented advisor to see if their school participates.

The National Spanish Spelling Bee takes a lot of hard work and dedication. The immeasurable benefits to the participants go far beyond helping them become better spellers.

The National Spanish Spelling Bee:

  • Promotes literacy.

  • Provides children with a positive goal to work toward.

  • Gives them a purpose for reading.

  • Provides a performance-forum to display the fruits of their hard work.

  • Aids children in learning concepts, improving comprehension and developing study skills.

  • Helps develop self-confidence, communication and public speaking skills, and the ability to thrive under pressure.

The experiences and the lessons learned by participants can last a lifetime.
