Professional Skills Certificate
Data is everywhere. Almost every industry relies on data to make decisions. Whether it is to understand customers and clients better, to streamline production processes, or determine funding needs, data gathered needs to be communicated. How will you show funders that you have a product worthy of their investment? How do you show the community how their tax dollars are being spent? How can you demonstrate to corporate leadership that your new idea will increase efficiency while maintaining quality? These are only a few examples of why it is important to be able to communicate the data in a meaningful and persuasive manner.
Through a mix of statistics and communication classes, students learn how to:
- Understand, process, extract value and communicate insights gathered from data
- Deliver compelling and influential presentations to different audiences
- Use AI tools effectively to effectively produce written communication (articles, reports, proposals, etc.)
This certificate is designed as a 4 course program intended to be completed over 2 years (1 class per semester). The courses are taught asynchronously online with assignments due weekly. All of the courses except MAT 2830 must be taken through UC Denver. The COMM classes can be taken in any order. The classes are:
- COMM 2050 Professional Presentations - 3 credits
- COMM 3072 Media Writing Skills for A.I. - 3 credits - prerequisites: 2 years of high school English with a B or higher recommended
- MATH 2830 Introductory Statistics (or MAT 1260 Introduction to Statistics taken through FRCC) - 3 credits - prerequisites: Algebra II
- MATH 4830 Applied Statistics - 3 credits - prerequisites: MATH 2830 or MAT 1260
This program is for students who have completed Algebra II and a minimum of two years of high school English (juniors and seniors). Students may take any of the courses even if they do not plan to do the entire certificate. Because all of these classes are taught online (but not self-paced) students should be motivated, have the ability to stay on track, and reach out for support when needed. Classes are taught by CU Denver faculty and supported by a BVSD associate instructor who will connect with students throughout the semester.
With pre-approval, BVSD will cover the discounted tuition for all non-charter students. To request approval each semester, please follow the instructions on the District Select webpage.
