Language Support

Here in BVSD, equity serves as the foundation for all we do. All students bring a wealth of linguistic and cultural experiences that contribute to and support their learning in BVSD. All educators are teachers of language and impact the experience and success of emerging bilingual students.  In BVSD we believe all students, educators, and families benefit from being part of a diverse learning community and that partnerships and trust between educators and families are critical to student success.

How are students identified as needing language support?

Students new to the district are identified by the Home Language survey that is completed during the online registration process. After talking with the student's family, and an assessment, eligibility for language development services are determined.

What instructional supports are provided in classroom?

We offer various instructional programs to meet the needs of our emerging bilingual students including:

  • Two-way Dual Language (at dual language schools)

  • Co-teaching (English Language Development teachers teach alongside classroom teachers)

  • Pull-out ELD ( separate English Language Development classes)

  • Newcomer Programming is offered at ELD program Elementary and Middle Schools and at Boulder/Centaurus high schools. This is for students who have been in the country less than 1 year.

Regardless of programming, ELD teachers provide:

  1. Direct instruction for emerging bilinguals (EBs)

  2. Collaboration with grade level/content teachers

  3. Ongoing monitoring of EBs that is available for parent communication with report cards

  4. Support to content teachers to ensure student access to all content areas
