On December 18, it was shared that all failing grades (‘F’s, Not Meeting the Standard) for the 2020-21 school year will be changed to a No Grade (“NG”) within the gradebook.
Why was this decision made?
We are aware that the impacts of COVID-19 on our system have left many students with the inability to effectively manage their schoolwork. Students have struggled academically for a variety of reasons this semester, such as limited access to an appropriate learning environment, inconsistent scheduling, or lack of online resources. We believe it is our responsibility to provide these students with an opportunity to retake the courses they are failing during this pandemic and obtain the necessary credits to move forward in their academic journey.
Are other districts making grading adjustments?
Yes, many districts are making similar adjustments to their grading systems to better support students who may have been negatively impacted as a result of the pandemic.
What do families need to know?
Students who receive an “NG” (No Grade) for a course will need to demonstrate their mastery of the standards covered in that course. Additional information, including the opportunities for these students to retake courses or demonstrate mastery of those standards will be available in the coming weeks.
What about first quarter courses?
All failing grades from the first quarter will be changed automatically to an “NG” and the failing grade will not be added to the student’s transcript.
