BVSD School Social-Emotional Supports
BVSD schools each have a variety of staff and programs to support the needs of their student populations.
Staff Supports for students
These are the key roles in our schools that support students's social-emotional and mental health needs.
A comprehensive school counselor provides education, prevention and intervention services in the areas of academic, career and social/emotional development support.
Attendance Advocates coordinate, strategize, advocate, and implement resolutions for attendance problems and or truancy in grades K-8.
Engagement Specialists collaborate with teachers, principals, and other school staff to identify the academic and social emotional needs of students in grades 9-12.
Provide direct services to students in grades K-5 with social/emotional and behavior concerns.
The Prevention/Interventionists (PI) are master’s-level or licensed professional mental health counselors employed by Mental Health Partners and contracted by BVSD to provide in-school, free of charge, mental health services aimed at resiliency building.
School Psychologists and School Social Workers provide integral support to student achievement, emotional/behavioral development, and establish a collaborative culture in buildings.

Conscious Discipline
Conscious Discipline empowers us to be conscious of brain-body states in ourselves and children. It then provides us with the practical skills we need to manage our thoughts, feeling and actions.
With this ability to self-regulate, we are then able to teach children to do the same. By doing this, we help children who are physically aggressive (survival state) or verbally aggressive (emotional state) become more integrated so they can learn and use problem-solving skills (executive state).
