This work supports our mission of collaboration, supporting student success with learning beyond the four walls of the classroom. It is most certainly supportive of the innovative guidelines. The International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE), a global organization connecting education leaders, announced that the DMNS Scientist in Action program connecting with Astronaut Lindgren on the ISS was selected as the winner for their Interactive Video Conference Innovation award! The project and the team were "recognized for outstanding achievement" at the ISTE conference in Denver this past June. This project provided students direct access to an out of this world research location and an amazing astronaut that used his weightless environment to demonstrate experiments and answer the personally relevant questions of students from across North America. Participants became an active part of the preparing for this significant event. Students learning included: research & writing skills, formulating questions, media presentation, videography, and related technical skills. DMNS experimented with different levels of connectivity; bridging the H323 connections of JPL & the ISS with 10 interactive schools in their classrooms, plus an additional 1000 view only students connected on a zoom webinar format. DMNS then broadened the conference reach by live streaming out to social media - youtube, ustream and periscope.
