Doris was nominated for the Pacesetter Award by Sanchez parents Lu and John Wright, who wrote, “In establishing the programs that support the school, [Doris] recognized that supporting the families was the way to support the students. While she is a visionary, she has manifested that vision in an amazing way.” Following are a few of those programs:

  • Implemented the International Baccalaureate program at Sanchez as well as renewing the PTA and establishing the Parent Leadership Team.
  • Implemented before and after school programming services for afterschool enrichment, the Dragon Discovery Program.
  • Established the Family Resource Center that includes partners such as Parenting Place, Sister Carmen, Intercambio, Family Literacy, Health Clinic, Emergency Family Assistance, Migrant Ed, and Clinica Campesina.
  • Established the Friends of Sanchez community partnership that includes partners such as NCAR, Growing Gardens, WOW Children’s Museum, CU Engineering, CU Teacher Ed, Lafayette Public Library, Rocky Mt. Theater, and Thorne Nature Experience.
  • Led Sanchez Elementary 25th Anniversary Celebration that included activities such as honoring the family of the founder, Alicia Sanchez, a Latina activist, who was recognized as the Boulder County Woman of the Year in 1977 and received the Susan B Anthony Award in 1981
  • Attained and implemented grant from Colorado Legacy Foundation to redesign school programs and the school day resulting in more collaboration time for teachers and more focused instruction for students.
Josie Heath, President of the Community Foundation Serving Boulder County, wrote in her letter of support for Doris’s nomination, "Wow! What a difference one person can make.  Every child, every parent should have a school principal like Doris Candelarie."
